Welcome to Innovation
The Science and Mathematics Department will be recognized as a center of excellence for pedagogical innovation. Students and professionals will have access to a robust learning environment where interdisciplinary teaching, problem-based learning, and research-infused training will develop their potential as confident and creative critical thinkers, and leaders with a solid understanding of themselves and their world.
Begin your S.T.E.M. Literacy
The Science and Mathematics Department educates students to become competent graduates who are mathematically, scientifically, and technologically literate; and who possess appropriate knowledge, skills and dispositions to fulfill their potential as citizens of the 21st century. Graduates will understand and appreciate the role of science, mathematics and technology in addressing the critical questions of our world.
THE NEW FACE OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION
Don’t just passively receive knowledge — generate it. This simple idea is the basis behind the latest learning theories and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum reform at Marygrove. By actively engaging students and placing them in roles of mentor and research colleague, the curriculum comes alive in the form of discussion and collaboration.
Intertwine your Worlds
Coming off the elevator, one cannot help but be inspired by the active learning taking place. The Science and Mathematics Department (SAM) immerses you in an environment where the worlds of calculus and physics intertwine and complement each other, where chemistry and biology courses are conducted freely in and out of the classroom, and where urban leadership and social justice ideas are part and parcel to your education. SAM prepares you to be a skilled professional as well as a well-rounded individual by offering courses that educate you in the holistic sense through their use of explorative and engaging methods for problem-solving.
Employers Need you to Know
Science and math continue to permeate our lives educationally, economically and socially. People who expect to be competitive in the job market need a strong base of scientific knowledge and of quantitative reasoning, communication, and learning skills to enable them to move in any direction. Simply stated— the Science and Mathematics Department of Marygrove College is providing STEM majors and non-majors alike with hands-on experiences and knowledge to succeed in a vast majority of careers. The department continues to strive for improved teaching strategies and educational opportunities that allow students to become and remain competitive, productive individuals.
Our programs provide students with an excellent education and an exposure to new ideas with an emphasis on
scientific and mathematical literacy.
Baccalaureate Degree Programs
We offer baccalaureate degree programs in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, forensic science, health science, integrated science and mathematics. In addition, we offer an associate degree in health science, and certificate programs in environmental studies, forensic science and pharmacy technician. Our teacher education degree programs (biology, integrated science, mathematics) are nationally accredited and have state approval for K-12 teacher certification in Michigan.
The faculty and staff in the department strive to provide students with an exceptional educational experience. Here you will find small classes taught by faculty who know you and care about your educational and professional success. On-campus academic courses and independent research activities, as well as off campus co-op and internship experiences, support the department’s philosophy of a “hands-on” approach to the study of science and mathematics.
So, where do you see yourself in 10 or 20 years?
An applied mathematician determining the most efficient way to network a building, a green chemist working on the next generation of biofuels, a molecular biologist working to cure a crippling disease, a forensic scientist performing DNA analysis in a crime lab, a science or mathematics teacher, an environmental policy advisor, an actuarial scientist studying risk assessment, a nurse practitioner, medical doctor or dentist? Your opportunities are boundless, and the potential for satisfying and rewarding careers nearly limitless.
