Don Rizzo

Ph.D., Professor Emeritis

Dr. Rizzo received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 in biology and education from Boston State College, and his Master of Science in 1970 and Ph.D. in parasitology in 1973 from Cornell University.

Dr. Donald C. Rizzo has taught at Marygrove since 1974. As coordinator of the Biology program, Dr. Rizzo prepares students for careers in teaching, research, graduate study, medical, dental and nursing schools and pharmaceutical work. His book, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, had its third edition published by Delmar Cengage Learning in 2010. It is used by students throughout the world and helps to guide them through a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology, and the fascinating working mechanisms of our bodies. He was chairperson of the Science and Mathematics Dept. from 1975 – 2006.

Dr. Rizzo has been a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Medical School, in 1991 – 1996, where he taught the summer session biology component of the post baccalaureate Pre-Medical Scholarship Program for minority students. He is also a manuscript reviewer for Delmar Cengage Learning. He received the Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1990. In 2006, he received the Marygrove College Presidential Award for Teaching, in 2009 he received the Marygrove College Presidential Award for Scholarship and in 2010 he received the Marygrove College Presidential Award for Service.

His field worked studies have taken him around the world to collect material for presentations to his fellow staff members and students. His travels include tours of the Mayan sites on the Yucatan of Mexico, field worked in Florida, Alaska, Hawaii, New England and the California coast, and tours of botanical gardens and museums in France, England, Italy, the Baltic States, and St. Petersburg, Russia. He has also traveled to the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon Rain Forest, China, Greece, South Africa, Senegal, Spain, and the Caribbean Islands.
