Abigail Fusaro

Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Biology

Abigail Fusaro received her Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology from the University of Rhode Island in 2002, and her PhD in biological oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program in 2008. Before joining the Marygrove faculty in 2014, she served as a staff scientist at the Ocean Genome Legacy, a research associate with NOAA’s Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System, and a postdoctoral fellow at Wayne State University.

As coordinator of the Biology program, Dr. Fusaro prepares students for graduate and professional studies and careers in biological, biomedical, and environmental sciences. She is involved with the ReBUILDetroit consortium and enjoys engaging students in authentic research in the classroom and beyond. She has mentored more than 40 junior high school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate student projects. Her research in biodiversity, genetic connections among populations, and invasive species has brought her to deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the submersible Alvin, the waters of Puget Sound and Monterey Bay, coral reefs of the Philippines and Australia, and freshwater streams and watersheds around the Great Lakes.

Abigail has also taught courses at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and been a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Wayne State University, the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, and the Isles of Shoals Marine Laboratory. Though she grew up near the New Hampshire seacoast, her travels have taken her to 5 continents and 43 states. Her hobbies include cross-country skiing, reading science fiction and fantasy, and rock collecting.
